Herman Albert Krieg, son of William Krieg and his wife, Mary Sophia Rebecca Wilhelm, was born in June 1891 in Lancaster Township, Huntington County, Indiana.

Family tradition says that Herman served in the Lost Battalion during World War I although the records of his service were lost in a fire at the Army Records Center and all that survives is his pay record. The Final Payment Roll lists him as a member of the Casual Det. 1st Bn, 159th D.B. and he is not listed as a known member of the Lost Battalion.

Herman's favorite expression was "by golly Ned" and he liked to play Michigan Rummy. He married Eula Opal Tucker, daughter of William P. Tucker and Nevada Stephens, 1 February 1930 in Van Wert, Van Wert County, Ohio. He married secondly Almena Sarah "Susie" (Reichert) Roose, daughter of J.H. Reichert and Alice Whaler. She was the widow of Garrett Ray Roose.

Herman lived at Crooked Lake, Indiana and was a member of the "Old Settlers Society of Whitley County, Indiana". He was later a resident of Big Rapids, Michigan. He died 28 January 1970, age 78 years, at the Veterans Hospital in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan. He had no issue by either wife.
