TURNQUIST

Thelma Pauline Kells, youngest child of Charles and Bessie (Blue) Kells, was born March 25, 1914, on the family farm south of Russell. She passed away peacefully at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center Tuesday, May 6, 1997 at the age of 83.

Baptized at Trinity Church in Russell, Thelma later joined the United Methodist Church where she was involved in a wide variety of activities throughout her life.

Thelma was a member of Russell High School's largest graduating class in 1931 and looked forward to planning and attending their annual class reunions.

On May 28, 1938, she married Myrl Richard (Dave) Lucas. They had two daughters; Linda L. Sims, now of Pleasantville; and Leora L. Pruessing of Madison, Wisc. Dave and Thelma farmed near Russell for over 25 years until his death in 1963.

On Feb. 1, 1976, Thelma married Dale Turnquist in a ceremony in her home in Chariton. They resided there until her declining health required her move to the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center.

Thelma was a lifelong learner and teacher. She taught in area schools for 30 years, including nine years in rural one-room schools. Enthusiasm for learning and creative energy were her trademarks.

In 1963, Thelma graduated with honors from Drake University, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She was actively involved in the Iowa State Education Association, Retired Teachers Association, the Cancer Board's annual "Send a Mouse to College" drive, and Chariton's Business and Professional Women's Organization, where she had the honor to serve on local, district and state levels. The members of her neighborhood TNT Club were special friends.

Devoted to family and friends, Thelma delighted in occasions that brought people together. Her positive approach to life and its many challenges reflected her total faith in her Lord.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Dale, and his family; her daughters and their spouses; Harold Sims and Peter Pruessing; grandchildren: Tami, Scott (Nadine and children Benjamin, Caleb and Rebekah), Shawn Sims and Harold and Melissa Pruessing; sisters, Gladys Kells Baker, Edith Kells Matthews, and Darlene Kells Morrison; sister-in-law Hazel Green; many nieces, nephews and cousins and very special friends, Martha St. Lawrence and her granddaughter Cara. Dale's family include sons James D. Turnquist, Jr. and Dennis E. Turnquist; daughter Cynthia Bowers; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother Charles Turnquist and sister Arleen Ticky.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 9, 1997 at the Fielding Funeral Home with Rev. Paul McKinley and Pastor Dennis St. Lawrence officiating. Burial was in the Russell Cemetery. Scott Sims, Shawn Sims, Harold Pruessing, Charles Turnquist, Dan Morrett and Roger Pierce served as bearers.
