BESSIE BERTHA BLUE KELLS

Bessie Bertha Blue, youngest daughter of Andrew J. and Eliza Gookin Blue, was born July 25, 1872, south of Russell, Iowa. She spent all of her life on or near the farm where she was born. She departed this life on January 15, 1959 in White's Rest Home in Chariton, Iowa, after a lingering illness, at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 20 days.

She was converted in the winter of 1889 at the age of 16 at Washington Center School under the ministry of Rev. Mell, then united with the Trinity Evangelical Church. Later she transferred her membership to the M. E. Church in Russell where she remained an active member as long as her health permitted.

She was married to Charles A. Kells, June 9, 1892. To this union were born eight children: Glenn A. of Russell, Ardys E., deceased, Ray L. of Powell, Wyoming, Gladys Baker of Anamosa, Iowa, Darlene Morrison of Chariton, Ia., Arlene Underwood and Edith Matthews of Powell, Wyoming and Thelma Lucas of Russell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, February 24, 1947, and her son Ardys E., of Frannie, Wyoming, December 18, 1934. Her father, mother, three brothers, one sister, and two half-sisters also preceded her in death.

For many years she taught Sunday School classes, was an active member in the M. E. Ladies Aid Society, American Legion Auxiliary, W.C.T.U., The Garden Club and the H.H. Club. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, the welfare of her family always coming first. She was ever ready and willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors in time of sickness or distress.

Many times during the past few months of her illness, she had expressed her desire to go to her Heavenly Home to be with her Lord and loved ones.

Left to mourn her passing besides her children and families are a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ione Kells of Emporia, Kansas, 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Lester Hall, pastor of the Chariton Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. Archie Beals of Russell. Mrs. Marie Woodman and Mrs. Mabel Lindeman had charge of the flowers. Music was furnished by a male quartet composed of Dee Wright, Quincy Robb, Carl Henry Wright and Jimmie Werts, accompanied by Charles Wright. Hymns sung were "Sometime We'll Understand," "Precious Memories," and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Robert Kells and Dean Kells, grandsons, and Gerhard Fray, Alvin Lubben, Robert Walton and Charles DeBok, grandsons-in-law, were pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jim "Happy" Norman of Bethpage, L.I., N.Y., Andy Lockridge of Detroit, Mich., and Richard Werts, Earl Lockridge, Kenneth LaFavre, Howard Smith, Walter Larimer, Homer McKinley, Howard Larimer and Ralph Werts, all of Russell.
