Former mayor dies; City Hall to close for Friday funeral

Former Seguin mayor R.J. Burges Jr. died Wednesday, May 17[, 1989], at the age of 86.

Burges was a life long resident of Seguin and had been involved in the city and community all of his adult life, serving as president of the Seguin and Guadalupe Chamber of Commerce and serving on the board of directors for many years.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, May 19, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Logan Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery under the direction of Goetz Funeral Home.

Mayor Betty Jean Jones has announced that City Hall will close from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday.

"The city of Seguin and its citizens have lost a respected public servant and a friend. Mayor Burges will be sorely missed," Jones said.

He is survived by his wife Helen Burges of Seguin; two sons, William H. Burges of Seguin and R.J. Burges III of Round Rock; two grandchildren, Margaret E. Burges and Richard J. Burges IV; and one great-grandchild, Ashley Burges.

Serving as pallbearers will be Alfred Koebig, Sydney Bauer, Jack Baker, Paul Fritz, Leroy Schneider and R.L. Blevins Jr.

Burges and his father owned Burges Drug Store and served as its pharmacists for many years. He served as mayor of Seguin as did his grandfather. He was a past exalted ruler of the Seguin Elks Club and served as the city treasurer for 26 years.

Burges was also a life long member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where he served as a vestryman.
