EDWIN AUGUST HESS

EDWIN AUGUST HESS passed away at the University Hospital, Minneapolis, January 25th. Born in Hieboch, Germany, December 13, 1866, (Heubach, near Meiningen on December 17, 1866 according to baptismal record in Heubach church) at the age of one year he came to America with his parents, Emil and Christina (Reinhardt) Hess, and settled on the farm in the town of Nelson where he resided until his death.

Prior to taking over the present homestead, Mr. Hess spent some time working on Beef Slough with a logging crew.

In the year 1897 he was united in marriage with Permilla Ellen Lockard. To this union 12 children were born: Christina (Mrs. Orville Adams); Pearl (Mrs. Norman Wesley), Vera (Mrs. Oren Ellingson) all of Madison; Rose (Mrs. Robert Braun), Minneapolis, Russell, Milaca, Minn.,Clayton, Cochrane; Walter, Albert, Melvin, Mrs. Dorothy Weaver, Betty and Reathel, all at home. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, two of whom took part in the services, Miss Doris Braun, Minneapolis, soloist and the organist, Miss Louise Ellingson, also four brothers, John and August, Greenough, Montana, Albert, Richey, Mont., and William, Ajai, Cal.,one sister, Mrs. Hulda Johnston, Minneapolis and two half-sisters, Clara and Minnie Hess, also of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Lisetta Hartman and her twin sister, Gustine, who died in infancy and one brother, Gustav, Cumberland.

Mr. Hess lived a full and happy life, a devoted companion to his wife, encouraging and counseling his children with a deep wisdom and understanding gleaned from a long life of experience. He was a devout follower of the teachings of the church, for several years holding the position of superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School and a respected citizen of the vicinity.

Services were held Monday, Jan 28th at the house at 1:30 and the Nelson Community hall at 2 o'clock, Rev. Schweppe officiating.

Pallbearers included 3 sons and 3 sons-in-law: Walter, Melvin and Clayton Hess, Oren Ellingson, Orville Adams and Robert Braun. Burial was made in the Nelson cemetery.

Others who attended from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Baumann and Loretta, Buffalo City, Walter Hartman, Pepin, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Priefert and Laverne, Arkansaw, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schroeder and Pvt. Marvin Schroeder of Winona, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Prussman, Minneapolis.
