BURNS FATAL TO A CHILD INTO BOILING WATER

Little Regis Wessel Scalded in Household Accident
The Barney Wessel home, four miles northwest of Centralia, lost the youngest child, Regis Leonard, two years old, late Friday night as a result of scalding burns received when the infant fell into a pail of extremely hot water, near boiling temperature.

Mrs. Wessel had been canning beef, using a tub of water on the stove. In preparing to get rid of the water, she emptied some into a pail. The child backed into the pail.
Regis was taken at once to the Sabetha hospital. For a time it was thought he might recover but the burns were too extensive. Mrs. Wessel had prepared the water for use in butchering.

Rev. Father Grosdidier, the family pastor sang an Angel mass this morning at nine o'clock in Sacred Heart church and burial was in the parish cemetery. Four little boys, cousins of Regis Leonard, were pallbearers. They were Kenneth Halfen, Frederick Hermesch, Norbert Wessel and Marvin Mathewson. Two other cousins, Francis Deters and Lambert Hermesch, served mass.

Regis Leonard Wessel was born at Centralia on June 9, 1938. Although only two years of age, he had friends both young and old. He was the center of all attractions because of his pleasant smile and cheery disposition.

He will be greatly missed by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Wessel, his six brothers and five sisters. They are Mrs. Clara Reiter, Marysville; Mrs. Alvina Brucken, Baileyville; Leona of Parsons, Kansas; Raymond, Lorena, Elmer, Adrian, Bernard, Rose Edna, Paul Donald and Galen of the home. A sister, Dorothy, passed away in 1930.
