Raymond H. Wessel, 86, Topeka, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Wessel was a self-employed auto mechanic before he retired.
He was born Feb. 23, 1918, at Kelly, Kan., the son of Barney and Rose Anna Osterhaus Wessel. He moved to Topeka from Seneca 41 years ago. Mr. Wessel served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Post 400 of the American Legion and Philip Billard Post 1650 of the VFW.
He married Mary H. Brucken on May 22, 1946, in Holton. She survives. Other survivors are two sons, John R. and LeRoy Wessel, both of Plainville; four daughters, Ruth Appelhanz , Topeka, Marjorie Andrew, Aurora, Colo., Mary J. Dennis, Topeka, and Arlene Evans, Merritt Island, Fla.; five brothers, Elmer and Adrian Wessel, both of Topeka, Bernard Wessel, Arvada, Colo, Paul Wessel, Hemet, Calif., Galen Wessel, Heber Springs, Ark.; two sisters, Lorena Koch, Seneca, and Rosedna Morris, Topeka; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, with military honors provided by a Fort Riley unit.
Mr. Wessel will lie in state after 3 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where a parish rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.
