Elmer B. Wessel, 85, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011. Elmer was born July 2, 1926 near Centralia KS, the son of Barney and Rose Osterhaus Wessel.

He served in the US Army during WWII in the South Pacific. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1945 where he flew the B-17, B-29, Ke 97, C-124, or in his words, anything that had wings. Elmer retired from the Air Force in April of 1971.

He married Edith Fuller on Nov. 27, 1951 and she died Sept. 4, 1980. They had two children, Phil and Virginia Ann (Ginny). Elmer married Bernice Deters Kohake Jan. 3, 1994. She survives

Other survivors include his children Phil Wessel (Barbara) and Virginia Hardy (Jerry, deceased), four grandchildren, Kelly and Cory Wessel and Harrison and Courtney Hardy; step-children, Nancy Popek (Tom), Beverly Kohake, Dr. Cecil Kohake (Nancy) Dr. George Kohake; six step-grandchildren; brothers, Bernie and Paul; and a sister, Rosie Morris.

Elmer was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
