Betsy was the 2nd of two children born to Per Hansson and Brynhild Andersdatter Eidem Svardal who lived to adulthood. She was 6 when her father died. A short while later, her Uncle Bardo Eidem (her mother's brother) and wife and two children arrived from Norway and the two families lived together as one for several years, farming.

Betsy, like her sister and cousins (above) imitated her father's Sognese accent. Even though she was 6 when he died, she spoke Norwegian all her life as though she were born in the Sogn Fjord in the 1800s, as did her sister and cousins (above). She attended Flata, the one-room school within walking distance to the farm. She was fluent in Norwegian and English.

Betsy and her mother raised Alma, her sister Anna's and Erik Nilsson Sanvik's daughter, born July 7, 1890 in Dodge County. Betsy's mother died of eye cancer January, 1900 and Betsy got the farm.

When Alma obtained a nanny job and moved to Iowa, Betsy married Thorvald Moland in February, 1907. Thorvald was a brilliant Norwegian immigrant with a good academic education, fluent in several languages.

In 1933, Betsy's daughter, Clara's husband died suddenly, before the birth of Clara's 3rd child. Clara immediately came home to live with her parents at the Moland farm. Betsy helped Clara raise the three children.

Betsy and Thorvald farmed together in Dodge County; and raised four children: Hilmer, Opal, Clara and Bennie. Thorvald died in 1936. Shortly thereafter Betsy sold the farm to Hilmer and moved to Kasson with her daughter, Clara and family; and son Bennie.

Betsy died in 1951, several years after a stroke, with advanced diabetes. She was baptized, confirmed, married and buried at South Zumbro.
