Bertis L. Kay, 89, Buffalo, died July 7 at the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo.
He was born Nov. 1, 1905, in Sheridan, the son of William Stephen and Marie Logan Kay. He grew up in the Sheridan area, and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1923. Kay attended the University of Nebraska.
He married Dorothy Sackett in Gillette on June 16, 1930. They made their home in the Big Horn and Sheridan communities, where he worked as a ranch foreman and later as a manager at the Cashway Lumber Co. in Sheridan.
After the death of his wife, Kay married Erma L. Miley on Dec. 23, 1976, in Lawrence, Kan. They lived in Lawrence until 1990 when they moved to Buffalo where they had lived until the time of his death.
Kay was a member of the Masonic Lodge 8 of Sheridan. He was a past high priest of Royal Arch Masons and a member of Knights Templer 6 and the Kalif Temple of the Shrine in Sheridan.
He is survived by his wife, Erma, of Buffalo; one son, W. Wallace Kay, of Renton, Wash.; two daughters, Patricia K. Smith of Buffalo and Arlene S. Kay of Cheyenne; one stepson, Tom Kay of Lawrence, Kan.; one stepdaughter, Elaine Baugher of Fairfax, Va.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy, his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Private graveside funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn, with the Rev. Jon Damaska officiating. Donations can be made to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in care of the Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo.
