Published in the Wood County Daily Sentinel Tribune 13 February 1933 (a Monday):
WOOD CO. PIONEER DIES IN OBERLIN. Mrs. Amanda L. Callin passed away at 2 o'clock Sunday morning at the age of 77, at the home of her daughter in Oberlin. Last Wednesday evening she was stricken with paralysis of the throat, and her weak heart could not stand the strain of her fight for breath.
Mrs. Callin was the eldest child of William and Lydia Ann Walker, of Scotch Ridge, being born March 14, 1856. At the age of 17 she married John H. Callin, of Bowling Green, who preceded her in death 20 years ago. Seven children were born to them: Byron H., of Florida; Leola, who died in infancy, John Q. and Prentice G., of Bowling Green; Emma, of Oberlin; Ray of Berlin Heights. O.; and Wells, who died 12 years ago in Montana. There are 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, who also survive her.
In the spring of 1885 her husband purchased 80 acres of land eight miles north of Bowling Green in what was known as the "Black Swamp," or "Devil's Hole." Herself the daughter of pioneers, she shouldered her full share of the toils and hardships of making a new home with her pioneer husband. In the lean years of the struggle, her indefatigable spirit kept before her a vision - a better home and a log hut, clear fields in place of forest, dry land where lay the swamp, good roads in place of boggy trails - a vision which was only realized after 17 long years.
Busy as she was, she still found time to visit the sick and distressed of the neighborhood. She also took active part in church and Sunday school. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the Woman's Relief Corps.
Funeral services will be held for her at Deck's chapel at one o'clock p.m., Thursday. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
