Israel Causey was born in 1800 in N.C. to the parents of Ezekiel Causey and Elizabeth Clary. Most information on him lists his birth place as Buncombe Co., however I have found no proof of any Causeys in Buncombe NC. Apparently, the Ezekiel Causey who was in the 1790 Edgecombe NC census was a different Ezekiel Causey who married Ann Morgan. In the early 1800's Ezekiel and Elizabeth and some of their children moved to Jefferson Co. Ga, to land that Ezekiel received for his Revolutionary War service. That is where Ezekiel and Elizabeth died and are buried. Israel married 1) Susannah Cowart on 17 April 1817. (Per Jefferson County, GA Marriages - A to Z - 1802 to 1857 - Groom Index) They had a daughter:

1. Celia Ann Elizabeth b 1818.

Susannah died at an early age. My speculation is that she might have died in childbirth, but I have no proof of it. She is believed to be buried in Jefferson Co. Ga., possibly in the graveyard of her parents, John and Michal Cowart. Israel married 2) Margaret Foyle in Jefferson County, as he is on the 1830 Jefferson Co. census with 2 males 5-10 (Liberty and William), 1 female 10-15 (Celia Ann, who was 12), and a woman 20-30, who would have been Margaret. Israel and Margaret had 9 children:

1. Liberty H. Causey b 1827
2. William Montgomery Causey b 1829
3. Elizabeth Jane Causey Quillian b 1831
4. Patrick Henry Causey b 1834
5. Mary Agnes Causey Mitchell b 1837
6. Israel Putnam Causey b 1839
7. Margaret Causey Kerley b 1841
8. Sarah A. Causey Cousins b 1845
9. Frances Ella Augusta Causey Perkerson b 1849

They moved to Carroll County, where he acquired land in the land lottery, and where he was an overseer for the gold mines in Villa Rica. He then built the house on Maxham Road in Cobb Co. in 1842, and donated the land on which Causey's Chapel and the Shady Grove Cemetery sit in Austell. The name of the chapel has changed over the years. Right now there is a sign out front that says Shady Grove Baptist Church. A man by the name of Herbert Maxham Findagrave # 35583541, who family legend says was a Union soldier who was camped around the house during the Civil War, came back after the war and bought the house from the Causey family. I don't know what year that was, but it was in the Maxham family up until it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is listed under "The Israel Causey House".
