March 13, 1903, Newpaper Obituary:

Just after the opening of the polls Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Mary J. Erasmus, mother of Harry Anson, candidate for the nomination of the city auditor, passed away at her son's home, 228 Carroll Street.

Mrs. Erasmus had been suffering for over a year with a complication of diseases and had been confined to her bed for over three months.

She was one of the best known of Akron's women, having lived in this city continuously since 1845, when she moved to Akron from Newton Falls. Mrs. Erasmus was born February 17, 1827, in Baltimore, Maryland, and moved to Ohio in 1842. She was married in this city in 1846, to Henry Anson, since deceased and from this union two children were born, George F. Anson, deceased, and Harry Anson.

In 1853, Mrs. Anson became the wife of the late Timothy Erasmus. She has lived with her son at his home on Carroll Street for the past 12 years and the funeral will be held from that place, Sunday at 2 p.m. (End of obit).

ERASMUS - In Akron, Ohio, March 12, 1903, at 228 Carroll Street died of exhaustion, Mrs. Mary J. Erasmus, aged 76 years. Funeral at the residence of Harry Anson, 228 Carroll Street, Sunday at 2 p.m. Internment at Glendale. (End of obit).

Mrs. Mary Jane (Barriball) Anson - Erasmus was preceded in death by her husband of her first marriage, Henry Anson; her husband of her second marriage, Timothy Erasmus; her son, George "Frank" Anson; her father, William Barriball, and her mother, Mrs. Hepizbah Barriball.

Mary Jane (Barriball) Anson - Erasmus was christened on April 16, 1827, at the St. Paul Protestant Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

Mary Jane (Barriball) Anson and Timothy Erasmus married on January 3, 1854, in Summit County, Ohio, as per marriage record. She was the second wife to Timothy Erasmus. They had no children from this union, however, Mary Jane did have two sons from a previous marriage, Frank and Harry Anson.

Mary J. Erasmus mentions in her Will those that survive; her son, Henry W. Anson; her daughter-in-law, Sarah R. Anson; and her granddaugher, Mary Francis Anson. Henry "Harry" W. Anson inherited the Erasmus estate.

The real estate property on which she made her home was described at beginning at a point 112 feet West from the Southwest corner of Carroll and Sumner Streets. The property is now known as the Akron Unversity Football Field.

Mary J. Erasmus and Timothy Erasmus are found on the Summit County, Akron, Ohio, 1870 and 1880 Census.

Cause of Death: Stricture of pylorus (which is the lower orifice of the stomach opening ino the duodenum).

Gravesite Details

The ERASMUS name is on one side of the monument along with the year 1877, the year it was placed in the cemetery. It has family names inscribed on all sides.
