Anna Virginia Whitney was born in Merrill on May 10, 1913 to William Perry
Morton Whitney and Augusta Kattenhorn. Her grandparents were pioneers in the
area having arrived in the early
1870's. Her frandfather, Elkanah Whitney was the first postmaster at Tulelake,
Oregon. She attended the Dodds Hollow School with her siblings, Morton, Inez
and Calvin, two younger sisters weren't in school yet, Rahael andHarriet. The
family later moved to the Willamette valley and Virginia finished her schooling
in Medford.
She married Charles Sumner Davis on January 19, 1930. Three children were
born to this union, Luella (Murphy), Lewis R. Davis and Anna Marie (Kennedy)
Davis.

Anna Virginia Davis, 84, died April 5, 1998, in Sacramento following a brief illness.

She was born in Merrill to William Perry Whitney and Augusta Kattenhorn Whitney. Her grandparents, Elkanah and Mary Ann Whitney were early pioneers in the Linkville and Merrill areas. She attended Gale School near Dodd Hollow and later attended Medford High School.

In 1930, she married Charles Sumner Davis in Merrill. Virginia and Sumner lived on their State Line Road homestead near Hatfield until 1966 when they moved to Oroville, Calif. She had been a homemaker, mother, and in later years, became cafeteria manager for the Tulelake School District and then secretary to George Eliott, when he was principal at Henley High School.

She retired from the Butte Valley School District in Oroville in 1978. She was a past member of the Rebekah Lodge and advisor for the Theta Rho Girls at Merrill. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Retired Public Employees Association.

She and Sumner loved to travel and made many tiprs throughout the United States. She traveled to the British Isles in 1980, and later, throughout Europe with one of her granddaughters.

At the time of her death, she was residing in a Sacramento area retirement community to be near her son.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Anne Davis of Fair Oaks, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Luella and Tim Murphy of Klamath Falls and Anna Marie and Dr. William J. "Biff" Kennedy Jr., of Seneca, S.C.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Harriett and Harold Oaks of Durham, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
