OBIT:

Dirk Oltman, one of the prominent and very widely known residents of the southern part of this county died at his home in Jackson Township at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, aged eighty-four years, four months and twenty-nine days. An attack of pneumonia and other ailments incident to his advanced age caused his death. He had been in failing health for the past two years and the death of his wife two years ago was also a great shock to him. However he had not been confined to his bed until the last two weeks.

The deceased was born near Cincinnati, Ohio, October 14, 1833, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dirk Oltman. The family moved to Bartholomew County this state while Mr. Oltman was a very small child and he spent the greater part of his life in that county, locating in Jackson Township Shelby County, about eighteen years ago.

Mr. Oltman was first married to Miss Elizabeth Crosby and they were the parents of one son, Noah Oltman, who died at the age of thirty years. He was married the second time to Susan Reed and six children were born to this union, four of whom survive. The four children surviving are all sons, namely, George E. Oltman, of this city, who is county surveyor; William Oltman, of Jackson Township and Harvey and John Oltman, both at home. Harvey is trustee of Jackson Township. Other near relatives are a stepson, Charles Reed of Hendricks Township; two half brothers, Johnson and Simeon Hogan of Bartholomew County; a half-sister, Mrs. Susan Krebs of Kansas, and six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

There was probably no man in this county more respected than "Uncle Dirk" Oltman, as he was generally called, and his death has removed one of the most highly esteemed men of the community. He was a regular attendant at the Blue River Baptist Church of which he had been a member for many years.

The funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at the Blue Rive Baptist Church, Rev. Samuel Stoughton officiating. Burial will be made in the Conover Cemetery in the family lot in charge of Stewart and Fix, undertakers.
