Sadly, J. O. and wife, Lena of Champaign, Illinois, formerly of Mattoon, passed away due to injuries in a tragic automobile accident near Lake Wales, Florida while vacationing with friends. A funeral service was held Sunday, March 4, 1956, at the First United Methodist Church, 16th and Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois, with Dr. George V Herrick and Rev. Donald Crocker, officiating. Broadway Avenue was closed, as people lined the street to watch with respect, two black hearse proceed side-by-side down Broadway, carrying J. O. and Lena to Dodge Grove Cemetery for burial.

J. O. was employed as an accountant over the years & was the assistant Chief Clerk of the Illinois Central Railroad in the administrative central office in Champaign at the time of his passing. J.O. and Lena were blessed with forty-five years of marriage and were active in the First Methodist Church throughout their lives.

Preceeding him in death are his parents; Elijah W. and Mary Ann (Connell) Edington, and infant grandsons; Gregory E. Cochran and Joe Kent Hardesty. Surviving are daughters; Mary Louise (Estel) Hardesty and Wilma Kathleen (Marshall) Cochran; and grandchildren; Joyce and Jerry Hardesty and Marsha, Mike, and Mindy Cochran, all of Mattoon.
