Elijah W. Edington, age 67, son of Thomas and Ursula E. (Moore) Edington, was born near Koleen, in Jackson Township, Greene County, Indiana on December 15, 1860, and died in Mattoon, Illinois, April 18, 1928. Elijah died from injuries sustained in an accident in Mattoon, when a fast express train on the Illinois Central Railroad struck and demolished the automobile in which he was a passenger.

He was the fifth of eight children, four of whom have preceded him in death. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. W. H. Mansfield, of Bloomfield; Mrs. John McLaughlin, of Lyons; one brother, Leonard Edington, of Lyons. His childhood and young manhood was spent on the farm. He received his education in the schools of Greene County, and helped others receive their education in the same schools, having been a teacher in several of them for twenty years in the prime of life. On November 3, 1885, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Connell, who passed away on September 7, 1924. To them eight children were born. Two died in infancy. Surviving children are S. Ray Edington, of Grand Island, Nebraska; R. Van Edington, of Shoals; Jasper Oyvind Edington, of Mattoon, IL, with whom he was living when he passed away; Mrs. Hobart Combs, of Cincinnati, Ohio; R. Paul Edington, of Trinity Springs; and T. Don Edington, of Straughn. Of these six children, four have followed in the path of their father, teaching in the schools of the nation. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and various nieces and nephews.

Elijah gave his heart to his Creator with a brother and two sisters, early in life, uniting with the Christian Church in Koleen, under the leadership of Uncle Isaiah Fields, and remained an earnest and faithful follower unto death. He was devoted to his family, always ready to labor and sacrifice for their welfare. Struggling, many times against discouraging odds, and with their loyal support and help, he accomplished the education of his children. His family was one devoted to one another. Besides serving the public as a teacher, he has faithfully carried out its trusts as trustee of his native township, and as deputy sheriff of his county under his brother, the late William W. Edington.

Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church by Rev. Daniels, pastor of the Worthington Christian Church. A quartet composed of G. E. McCracken, H. L. Doney, M. F. Pate and J. W. Cushman sang several appropriate songs. Interment in Grand View Cemetery, Bloomfield, Indiana.
