In 1887 this family was devastated by the measles. Emma is the only daughter to survive, Eleanor had died sometime before this incident.

Handwritten transcriptions in granddaughter Ruby Elizabeth Crickmer Coup journal: "On the 26th of April, Mrs Ruby, wife of Eli Allen, of Summerhill township, died from the effects of measles. On the 2d of May Mrs. Charles Southard eldest daughter of Mr. Allen died of same disease at her home in Kelloggsville, Ohio on the morning of the 6th Mrs. Robert Sloan, the third daughter, living in the same house with her parents, died, and on the following day, Mrs. Alex McGuire the second daughter died of the same disease at her home in Summit, only a little distance from the home of her parents, Mrs. Sam Crickmer, of Akron Ohio, the only remaining daughter, was called to her old home to attend the funeral of her mother, bringing her two children with her. While here, both were attacked with the measles, and the youngest, a boy about sixteen months old, died on Sunday. He was apparently doing well up to the day of his death, when he was attacked with spasms.
Mrs. Southard was 44 years old, Mrs. McGuire 39 yrs and Mrs. Sloan 37 yrs. The father Eli Allen, is yet very poorly, and four of Robert Sloan's children, though better, are not yet considered out of danger. Five deaths those of a mother, three daughters, and a grandson, inside of two weeks, all from a disease not usually considered dangerous, is a most remarkable record, and is more especially noteworthy from the fact that no other deaths have occurred from the disease in the immediate vicinity."

"Eli Allen, whose dangerous condition has been noted in these columns died on Thursday last at the advanced age of 78 years. He leaves but one daughter, his wife, three daughters and a grandson having died within the past four weeks. His funeral was held in the Methodist Episcopal Church Saturday and was largely attended. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Crickmer will return to their home at Akron O. this week. Mr. Crickmer came over to attend the funeral of his father-in-law, his wife having been here for the past six weeks."

May 26 1887 Obituary "Eli Allen, who within the past month has lost his wife, three daughters and a grandchild, died on the morning of the 19th, aged 78 years. He had been in poor health for some time and his death was not unexpected. He was a son of Horace Allen, one of the earlier settlers of the country, and spent the most of his long life in this vicinity."
