Francis Austin "Austin" Watts was a baby when his parents and some older siblings emigrated by wagon from the Midwest to Oregon Country in 1847, the family settling in what later became Benton County. In his youth he was a farmer, but later became a druggist (pharmacist) and operated a drugstore in Portland. His son Laurence Watts, also a pharmacist, later helped him at this drugstore. Austin married Emma Gilbert in Lane County, Oregon on 12 June 1872. They had three children, one of whom was apparently dead by the 1910 census. The two children who survived to adulthood were Linnie M. Watts, born 7 May 1874 in Shedd, Linn Co., OR, and Laurence Russell Watts, born 23 August 1877, also in Shedd, OR. Austin was cremated, but we don't know if his ashes were interred somewhere or scattered.

The Watts and Gilbert families intermarried extensively, as in the case of Austin Watts and Emma Gilbert, J.B. Gilbert and Irena Watts, and Philander Gilbert and Mary Watts.
