Roland Smith Jr. was born on March 5, 1924 in DeSoto, Nebraska, to Roland and Eva (Schafer) Smith.
He was baptized in April of 1928 at the Methodist Church in Blair.
Roland attended March School and later graduated from Blair High School.
He served in the United States Army during WWII, landing on Omaha Beach just a few days after D-Day. After the war, Roland returned to Nebraska and began farming in the DeSoto area.
He married Marjory Ann Dey on April 7, 1946. The family moved to the Schafer Farmstead in the spring of 1953 and farmed there as well as the DeSoto farm.
He continued the family tradition of entering bushels of corn in the county and state fairs, where the Smith family won numerous awards.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Blair American Legion, the Blair VFW, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Blair, as well as serving for many years on the March School District #31 School Board.
Roland Smith, Jr was blessed with 2 sons and a daughter, 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Roland Smith, Jr. passed from this life Sunday, August 2, 2015, at his home in Blair, Nebraska.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Roland Smith Sr. and Eva Smith; his wife, Marjory Smith; and his son-in-law, Michael Moore.
Visitation beginning at 4 pm Wednesday, Aug. 5, with family receiving friends at 5 pm, followed by a prayer service at 7 pm at the Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair, Nebraska. Funeral 10:30 am Thursday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Blair. Burial will follow services in the Blair Cemetery.
Pastor Shawn C. Linnell conducted the funeral, and offered words of comfort. Katy Flynn was organist, and Kenny Smith vocalist, singing "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer". The congregation sang "On Eagle's Wings", "God's Own Child", and "The Old Rugged Cross".
Pallbearers were: Aaron Barge, Dusty Book, Greg Huff, Brian Koch, Patrick Martin, Dylan Moore, Mike Starzyk and Jarred Smith.
Honorary Pallbearers: Tim Alberico, Jim Custard, Wayne Dein, Ron Hineline, Jack Jensen, Richard Kruse, and LeRoy Stevens.
Graveside services were held at the Blair Cemetery, Blair, Nebraska.
Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in service to the family.
