Ernest was the son of John Martin Reiss and Margaret Ann Cullens. He was born in Galena, Illinois but his family moved when he was still an infant to Kansas. The family is seen in the 1885 Kansas Special Census living in Ridgeway, Osage County, KS. In the 1900 US census he is still living with his parents in Delhi, Osborne County, KS. He married Rose Ella Rumsey on her birthday, Jan 14, 1902 in Osborne County, KS. In 1905 Special KS Census they are living in Fairview, Russell County, KS, in 1920 he and his family are living in Luray KS and his occupation is listed as lablor/odd jobs and by the 1915 census the family still living in Luray has 5 children, the youngest is a male 14 days old and yet to be named. (This child is John M Reiss Jr.) In the 1915 census he list his occupation as cream dealer. In his World War I Draft Registration of 1918 he is self discribed as tall, stout, blue eyes and brown hair and wroking for Kreger Brothers Creamery and Produce. In the 1920 Luray US Census he lists his occupation as farmer.
Shortly after the 1930 census Ernest opened a general store in Dumar, KS. This venture proved unsuccessful when a fire samaged the store.
Ernest moved his family to Lonita, Los Angeles County, CA. He worked briefly for the railroad and then began a career with Van De Camps Food, which would last until his retirement. His three sons would also work for that company. One son, Ernest Martin would reach a high position within the company and travel the world on the company's behalf. James Milbourne also attained a high postion in this company.

Ernest lost his wife, Rose Ella in 1948. He married again in about 1950 at the age of 71 to Lovina Mae Cleland also 71.
His grandson remembers:"I spent a lot of time with my Reiss grandparents and my grandfather was always doing a project for me--a fort in the tree above their patio, a fort under the downhill side of their house"

He was a well loved man.
