On July 2, 1876, James Reiss was born to John M. and Margaret Cullens Reiss in Jo Davess County, Illinois. He came to Ellis county with his parents when only a child where they homesteaded and lived for several years. From there they moved to ???County and lived there for a few years. At the age of 19, he moved with his parents to the Luray community. At this time he met Miss Bertha Harriet Rumsey and on January 7, 1908 the two were married in Russell. The early part of their married life was spent working on a ranch for Mr. Dayton (?) and they moved to a house out of town to two miles west of town where they lived until 1929. From this place they moved to the house now occupied by Birdie Cockrun. In 1942, because of failing health, they sold their equipment and moved to town where he spent the remainder of his life.
