Paris Man Killed by Tree

Slate Shoals. A Paris timber cutter was killed by a falling tree near Slate Shoals in northern Lamar County at mid morning Wednesday. Sheriff's deputies identified the victim as H.F. Brown, 337 West Sherman Street, Paris. The man was crushed to death by a 75 foot cottonwood tree that was whipped off its falling course by wind. Justice of the Peace R.J. Payne conducted an inquest and returned a verdict of accidental death. Deputy Sheriff Loyd Mathews said Brown and a companion, Floyd Bunch, were cutting the big cottonwoods on the Allan Womack place two miles east of Womack's Lake. Bunch was working on one tree, Brown on another. The tree being felled by Bunch had been notched to fall south but the wind whipped it to the southwest and it crashed across Brown. A saw had to be used to remove the tree from Brown's body. He was crushed and killed instantly. The body was removed to a Paris funeral home.
