THE PARIS NEWS, Sept. 1927

Man Found Shot Near Taylortown.

Suicide Verdict Is Rendered After Body Found By Two Small Children.

James Leatherwood, 48 year old, was found dead with a gunshot wound in his head late Monday afternoon near his home in the Taylortown community.

In an inquest held Monday night by Justice of the Peace Charles Parrot a verdict of death by gunshot wound self-inflicted, while in a state of temporary insanity, was returned. Sheriff E.R. Stubblefield and Deputy Sheriff Charley Baugh were present at the inquest.

According to the story told by members of the Leatherwood family, all had left the home place early Monday morning to go to Round Prairie to pick cotton, leaving Leatherwood alone at home. On returning late in the evening Leatherwood could not be found, but after a search two of his small children discovered the body near the corner of an outbuilding about 100 yards from the house. A loaded pistol with one exploded shell was found beside the body. The bullet wound was just above Leatherwood's right ear.

Leatherwood was said to have been last seen by a neighbor who saw him at a distance about 12 o'clock Monday.

It is the supposition of authorities that Leatherwood had been dead several hours before his body was found.
