She was the sixth child of George and Elizabeth Stover Garrett. Sarah was the g-g-granddaughter of Revolutionary War Soldier, Henry Valentine (NSDAR 116839). Sarah moved west with her parents and several siblings, first settling in Knox County, Ohio, then Richland County, Ohio. Sarah's first marriage was to a Mr. Horn, and one daughter, Mariah, was the issue of this marriage. Sarah remarried 29 Apr 1854 in Richland, Ohio to Mr. John Boyer (a German immigrant). She and John had 3 children, George Valentine Boyer, Mary Ann Boyer Franks and Malinda E. Boyer Huntsbarger. The young family was living near the Black Swamp, close to Toledo, in Ohio when the Civil War commenced. John patriotically joined the 3rd Ohio Cavalry. He remained a soldier for the duration of the war, dying in his father's home in Ashland, Ohio of disease contracted at a Southern Prison Camp, on 10 Jan 1865. Sarah was left a young widow with 4 children to raise. She supported them as a seamstress (her father was a tailor before buying the farm in Richland.). Sarah remained in Ashland, Ohio living with her daughter, Mariah and family, until her death 26 Dec 1911. She was buried in Ashland Cemetery on 28 Dec 1911.
