James served in the SC 15th Infantry (Co. "B") in the Civil War. He survived (with wounds) the battles of Antietam/Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, and Knoxville. In 1863, he was captured and was held prisoner at Rock Island, IL, until war's end, when he returned home to work on the family farm in Cross Anchor, SC. In the early 1870's, a number of Kelly and Myers families (longtime neighbors in Spartanburg District) migrated from SC to Panola and DeSoto Counties in northwestern MS. James and Margaret married there 3/11/1874. They later moved their family, along with those of James' parents and two brothers, to Sebastian County, AR (1879) and finally, to Montgomery County, AR (1886). There they homesteaded 160 acres just west of the Macedonia Cemetery.
