R.E. FLYNN DIES TODAY IN VIRGINIA: Former Police Chief also employed by state roads group:
Former Cumberland Police Chief R. Emmett Flynn, 67, died last night in Old Alexandria, Va, Hospital
Mr. Flynn, who had been a member of the Police Department for 22 years, served as chief from May 6, 1937 until his retirement, he was an inspector for the Maryland State Roads Commission.
During his police career, Mr. Flynn served as patrolman, five years as a detective and four years as a detective lieutenant. He was chief 12 years.
Mr. Flynn was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of police, an associate member of the National Sheriff's Association, a graduate of the FBI Academy Institute of Applied Science , the War Traffic School and Civil Defense schools.
He was graduated from LaSalle High School, attended business school for two years and took refresher courses in law enforcement at the University of Maryland.
During his lifetime he had been a member of the Cumberland Lions Club; Aerie 245 Fraternal Order of Eagles, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 63, Cumberland Council 586 Knights of Columbus, Henry Hart Post 1411 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion; and had served as treasurer of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Mr. Flynn was born June 10, 1897 and was the son of the late James and Ellen (Bahen) Flynn. Survivors include his widow, Eleanor F. Flynn; a daughter, Mrs. Frances Osbourne, Alexandria; a stepdaughter, Mrs. William F. Rice. LaVale; two sons, Patrick Flynn, Alexandria; Robert Flynn, California; two sisters, Sister Mary Kathleen and Sister Mary Ellen with the Ursuline Order in Louisville, KY.
The body will arrive at the Silcox Funeral Residence her tomorrow.
Services will be held Saturday at 9 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at the funeral residence Friday at 8:30 pm.
