Sister M. Kathleen Flynn, the former Elizabeth (Bess) Flynn, a native of Cumberland, died Thursday at St. Josephs Infirmary in Louisville, KY. Sister Kathleen, 71, was in the 53rd year of her religious life as a member of the Ursuline Sisters. She celebrated her golden jubilee as an Ursuline in Cumberland two years ago. For the past few years, Sister Kathleen had been off active duty because of illness. For 26 years she was a member of the faculty of Ursuline College, formerly Sacred Heart College, in Louisville, where she served in both the classics and history departments and for a time headed the history department. She also taught secondary school in Cumberland, and in Kentucky, South Carolina and Nebraska. Sister Kathleen authorized several works including a Latin text, and contributed articles to journals in the fields of the classics and history.
Surviving are a sister, Sister Mary Ellen Flynn, formerly Irene Flynn, also an Ursuline. Nieces and nephews surviving include Mrs. John G. Burke, Mrs. Mary Ellen Wolford, Mrs. Gene Porter and James Swann, all of here. The late Emmett Flynn, Cumberland Chief of Police, was a brother. Requiem high mass was celebrated Saturday at the Mother House in Louisville, and interment was in St. Michaels Cemetery there.
