Alfred Baerwald, an eighty-four year Lodi resident, passed away on February 4 at the age of 90. Born in Arndt, North Dakota to Emelie and Frederick Baerwald on January 13, 1914, he moved to Lodi with his family and graduated from Lodi High School in 1932. He attended Sacramento Junior College and was one of a group of the Lodi National Guard 143rd Field Artillery Battalion that saw action in Europe during World War II. He retired as a Major in the 49th Division Artillery. He was married to the former Ruth Rode; they had one daughter, Meta. After the War, he was a partner in the Electric Equipment Company. He was later a vineyardist and worked for the California Department of Employment as a Placement Officer. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Woodbridge Golf and Country Club, where, last August, he shot his age, 89. He was also a member of the American Legion , SIRS, IOOF and a former Rotarian.
Alfred was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Ruth, who died in September of 1998 and his ten sisters and one brother.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 10th at 10:30 AM at the Lodi Funeral Home. Inurnment will be private. There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 207 East Alpine Avenue,Stockton, CA 95204.
