| Birth: | Jun. 3, 1855, Australia | | Death: | Nov. 11, 1880 Melbourne Victoria, Australia | Australian Criminal. Fantasized himself as a "Robin Hood" type of outlaw. After being hunted by authorities for several years, police closed in on him and his gang. The element of surprise was blown and over 1,000 observers were awaiting the arrival of the police at the hideout. After a gun battle, Kelly emerged in a suit of armor that covered only his head and upper torso. Police shot him in the legs and captured him. He was tried and convicted of numerous crimes including the murders of several policemen. His last words on the gallows at Melbourne before being hanged were, "Such is Life." He was originally buried at what is now called The Old Melbourne Gaol. After the gaol was closed and redevelopment commenced he was moved to the Pentridge Prison at Coburg, Melbourne and reburied in the cemetery there. Pentridge Prison has now closed and is to undergo redevelopment as a recreation tourist and residential facility.
