Andrew Russel was the sixth child of Dr. Andrew and Agnes Scott Russel, born August 31, 1817, in Scotland. He emigrated to the USA (to Jacksonville, IL) with his parents in 1834. He married late, at age 47, in 1865, to the much younger Sarah Sinclair Rogerson (1841-1916), and to their marriage, six children were born before 1877.
Tragically, in 1877, a diptheria epidemic took the lives of all six of their children, who ranged from age 11 down to just 8 months. Andrew and Sarah then had three more children who lived to adulthood. The oldest child of the three, Mary Scott Russel, born in 1878, only lived until age 23. Her younger brother, Andrew Sinclair (1881-1955) had five children. The youngest sister, Elisabeth Lang Russel Cunningham, married at age 54, and had no children.
