MRS. ENGEL SCHUETTE
1872 – 1949
J. Engel Dirks was born on September 25, 1872 at Pella, Marion County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry Dirks and his wife Engel Dirks, nee, Rickels. She received the rite of Holy Baptism on September 27, 1827 at Nashville, Marion County, Iowa, by pastor Zettel.
She was confirmed on March 25, 1888
On February 23, 1899, Engel Dirks was united in marriage to John Friedrich Schuette from Schweinbrueck, Oldenburg, Germany, who had immigrated to the USA of North America. The marriage was performed in Wayne Twp. They lived on their farm near Langworthy where she resided until her death.
Two children were born to this union: Eliza Fredericka and Henry Herman Schuette. After a happy marriage of more than 15 years, her husband passed away on May 17, 1914.
In recent years, her health had not been good. A heart affliction troubled her. About 15 months ago in January, 1948, she suffered a slight stroke. For several weeks she was taken care of in the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Hayen of Monticello. She recovered from her illness and could again return to her home. About a week before the day of her departure, she suffered a severe stroke of apoplexy. Since then she was unconscious. On Thursday morning, she was taken to the hospital and that evening at 11:50 she passed away.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Hayen and her son, Herman: two grandchildren, Wilma, Mrs. Robert Stevenson of Scotch Grove and Arlene Hayen of Cedar Rapids. She is also mourned by one brother, Gerd Dirks and family of Langworthy.
The following sisters preceded her in death: Mrs. Fred Poppe (Catherine); Mrs. Fred Doden (Meta); Mrs. Harm Fechtmann (Johanna) and Mary Dirks who died in childhood.
