Walter "Snooks??? Bland, 93, of Carrollton died unexpectedly at his home early Monday morning, July 3, 2006. He was born on August 8, 1912 in rural route Kampsville, the son of the late James and Katherine Ringhausen Bland. He married the former Irene Goewey on May 6, 1933 and she preceded him in death on Oct. 31, 2005. They resided in Kampsville area until 1943 and then moved to a farm near Eldred. They lived there until 1994 when they moved to Carrollton. At the age of 18 Walter played for the Minor League System of the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team in Keokuk, IA, and because of homesickness for his family came back to Calhoun Co. and played baseball in the local area. He had a love of farming, hunting, and playing cards. He loved spending time with his family and telling stories of his earlier years. Surviving are 2 daughters and a son-in-law: Betty Reif of Carrollton, Patsy and Larry Churchman of Carrollton, a son and daughter-in-law: Dean and JoAnn Bland of Eldred, 10 grandchildren and their spouses: Debbie (Reif) and Roger Campbell, Robert and Cathy Reif, Rodney and Mary Reif, Darla (Reif) and Robert McPherson, Steven and Julie Bland, Kevin and Lisa Bland, Cindy (Bland) and John Adcock, Alan and Michelle Churchman, Kathy (Churchman) and Brian Schnettgoecke, Vicki (Churchman) and Randall Custer, 21, great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren. A brother Lester "Jake??? (wife Nola) Bland of Kampsville also survives. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter: , 2 sisters: Edna Gansz and Henrietta Gansz, 5 brothers: Albert, George, Howard "Taft???, Delbert and Ernest "Spud??? Bland, and 2 half brothers: William Ringhausen and Austin Bland. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. on Wed. at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thurs. at 10:30 A.M. with burial to follow in Eldred Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Eldred Memorial Gardens or Silver Creek Cemetery near Kampsville.
