Dr. A. J. Lieurance was called to Iowa Saturday on account of the death of his brother, Joe Lieurance. Mr. Lieurance was well known here, having lived here with is family several years. His friends will be sorry to hear of his death.

Joseph Lieurance a brother of Mrs. John Witt, of this city, died at their home last Thursday night after a brief illness, at the age of 59 years. He was born in Warren County, Illinois May 22, 1853[1854]. He leaves five children three girls and two sons residing in Neosho Falls, Kansas and Oklahoma and two brothers residing in Kansas. The funeral occurred at their home last Saturday and the interment took place at the Tinsley cemetery. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Rohrbaugh and the Odd Fellows had charge of the funeral services. –What Cheer, Iowa.

Joseph was the son of George & Amanda (Jarred) Lieurance. He was born in Illinois, but grew up in Mahaska County, Iowa.

His siblings were:
Cynthia L Lieurance McCama Witt (1846–1931)
Catharine Lieurance (1848–before 1860)
Andrew Jackson Lieurance (1852–1939)
Ezra W Lieurance (1858–1870)
Amanda A. Lieurance (1865–?)
Delbert Calvin Lieurance (1872–1939)

On July 31, 1881, he was united in marriage to Katherine M. Ewing. They were married in What Cheer, Keokuk, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, they left Iowa and moved to Lincoln, Stafford County, Kansas and then to Neosho Falls, Woodson County, Kansas, where Joseph's parents and family were now residing. After a few years, they left for what is now the Oklahoma Panhandle, where Katherine's mother and siblings were also settling. However, Joseph and Katherine's time in Oklahoma was short lived and they returned to Neosho Falls. Joseph and Katherine divorced sometime after 1910 and Joseph moved back to Iowa with his sister and her family.

Joseph and Katherine's children were:
Hugh T Lieurance (1882–1894)
Ethyl Lena Lieurance Shorb (1884–1961)
Howard George Lieurance (1886–1957)
Cynthia A. Lieurance Crawford (1889–1965)
Grace Waitsell Lieurance Green Leighton (1893–1959)
Clarence J. Lieurance (1898–1918)- Who died serving his country in France during World War I

They had two other children who died in infancy.
