He was born in Crowder, Oklahoma, to John Murray and Mary Emma "Marie" (Smith) Banks. He grew up there and graduated from Crowder High School. He then attended East Central College before entering into the ministry with the Church of Christ. He married Gladys Lee Reed on June 2, 1962, in Crowder. Crowder had always been his home, but his call to the ministry had taken him to other towns as well. He began in Dayton, Ark., then preached at North Town Church of Christ. He also preached at churches in Midwest City, Pine Bluff, Ark., Atoka, and finally at Crowder for more than 20 years. He was a true student of the Bible and had done many lectures around the country. He was also involved in television and radio ministry through his career and was a frequent editorial contributor to the newspaper. He passed away at his home in Crowder at the age of 63. He is survived by his wife, two sons, five grandchildren and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Jane Duff; his father-in-law, Howard Reed, and a sister-in-law, Mauvine Willson.
