Charles was the son of John Heiden and his first wife Fredericka Lehman Heiden. He came to America with his parents in 1883. His mother died when he was a little boy. His father remarried in 1884 to Johanna Voss. Charles married Clara Richter in Chicago, Illinois on August 7, 1899. They had eight children: Charles, Harry, Lillian, Robert, Rose, Alice, Herman and Louise Alma. Charles also had three half-siblings: Minnie, Louis William and Lizzie. Charles worked as a sheet metal worker. He was also an ardent fisherman and was recognized as an excellent guide on Geneva Lake, Wisconsin.
