Robert was a son of Charles Adolph and Clara (Richter) Heiden. He married Adora Isabelle Hendrickson on April 11, 1931. He owned and operated a sheet metal shop in Monroe, Wisconsin before working as a mechanical engineer for Perkins and Will Company in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Arlington Heights, Chicago in 1950.
