Sutton Man Dies in Webster Collision

A Sutton man died of injuries he received as a result of a collision early Friday morning near Diana, Webster County. Pronounced dead at the scene was Jerry Kieth Crites. According to authorities, the incident is believed to have occurred around 3 a.m. April 30. The late model Dodge truck in which the victim was the lone occupant apparently veered from the Holly River Road while traveling west and went over an embankment into Holly River. The incident was detected at approximately 8 a.m. by a passerby. Crites was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of death was listed as severe head injuries and drowning. The incident is under investigation by the Webster County Detachment of the State Police.

Crites, aged 32, was born in Braxton County and self-employed as a private investigator. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Military Police, a former city police officer, deputy sheriff and a candidate on the Democratic ticket of the June election for the office of sheriff. He was a protestant by faith.

Surviving: wife, Patricia Bennett Crites of Sutton, son, Dustin Keith; daughters Terra Michelle, both at home and Misty Lynn of Sutton; parents, Howard and Macel Crites of Little Birch; three sisters Irene Crites of Sutton, Barbara Coffman of Little Birch, and Kathleen Hoover of Fort Riley, Kansas; one brother, Kenneth Lee Crites of Zelienople, Pa.

Services will be held Tuesday, May 4th at 11 a.m. at the Sutton Baptist Church. The Rev. Barbara Yonteck and the Rev. William E. Griffin will officiate. Burial will follow in the Barnett Cemetery on Bug Ridge.

A private family visitation will be held Monday afternoon in the Greene Funeral Home in Sutton. Public visitation will be held at the Sutton Baptist Church beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday. Greene Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
