Vertie was the 11th child of Adolphus Poe and his wife Elizabeth Ann Bainbridge. She grew up on her parents' farm in Taylor County, along with 11 brothers and sisters.

Vertie married William LeRoy Everly and they had no children.

At the time of her death she resided at 68 1/2 West Main Street in Grafton. She died at 6 AM at Grafton City Hospital.
