Grace was the youngest of five children born to Henry Hercules and Anna Weir (Gibson) Switzer. Her older siblings were Charles Brace (m. Bessie Linn), Mary Myrtle (m. David White), Winnie Wilmetta who died at age 6 days and William Gibson (m. Clara Read) Switzer.

She was 17 days shy of age 5 when her mother died of cancer. Her maternal grandmother, Mary Scott Gibson helped Henry raise Grace and her siblings.

In about 1909 she married Harry Meisel. They did not have children. She and Harry lived in Seattle, Washington in 1910. By 1920 they had moved to Los Angeles, California. It is believed between 1920 and 1930 she and Harry seperated and she stayed in California and he relocated to Chicago, Illinois.
