Henry Hercules was the six of eleven children born to John and Priscilla Slonaker Switzer. He came west, to Illinois, about 1867 and located near Eureka where he worked for a number of years as a farm hand.

July 4, 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Weir Gibson, daughter of James and Mary Scott Gibson, in El Paso, Woodford Co., IL. Rev. R. G. Pearce of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiated at the nuptuals. Soon after they moved to a farm south of Piper City, Ford Co., IL. To this union were born five children; Charles Brace (m Bessie Linn), Mary Myrtle (m David White), Winnie (died at age 14 days), William Gibson (m Clara Read) and Grace Anna (m Harry Meisel)Switzer. Wife, Anna died March 27, 1894.

August 8,1898 he married Annie Rehrig, in Reading, Lyon Co., Kansas with Rev. L. Martin officiating. Twin sons were born to the couple February 7, 1899 but lived only 7 days. They were divorced in December 1900.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, Piper City, Ford Co., IL and served as 2nd Corporal, Co. C, 9th Regiment of Illinois National Guard and Corporal, Co. H, 4th Reg. of Infantry, Illinois National Guard.

Henry died of tuberculosis of the throat while visiting his sister in Vernon, Wilbarger Co., TX
