This is the site of the first Jewish cemetery in western Canada, established in 1883 when the bodies of five children who had died during the preceding winter were moved here from a temporary cemetery on Thomas Street. Land for the cemetery had been purchased for $300 in a campaign organized by Simon Lechtzier, David Ripstein, and others.
The site was eventually found too prone to flooding so it was closed in favour of the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on North Main Street. The last burial occurred on 20 June 1933, by which time the cemetery contained 110 graves. Subsequent vandalism toppled several tombstones so the remaining ones were laid horizontally to minimize further damage. (Source: Manitoba Historical Society [Adapted])
The non-profit Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada centralizes, curates and makes available extensive records from various groups related to the communities established by the families of their faith who contributed to the story of Western Canada.
This cemetery is located behind a house at 484 Almey St. There is no sign on the driveway at the residence, so it is very difficult to find because it is not visible from the street. However, from the yard of that house, there is a mown path through the bush which leads to this well-kept little cemetery surrounded by a locked chain link fence.
The cemetery fence can be seen from Reenders Drive (i.e., the wide road behind Kildonan Place Shopping Center).
The stones date from 1883-1933 and all are lying flat. Most are bilingual (Hebrew and English).

In the East Elmwood neighbourhood of Greater Winnipeg, though many mistake this location as being on the western boundary of the former Town of Transcona
A list of burials in this cemetery is available from the Manitoba Genealogical Society (reference #0239), transcribed by a member or members in 1987. Also available to MGS members is a searchable online database named the "MGS Manitoba Name Index" (or MANI). Some additional information is contained in the 1996 MGS publication "Carved in Stone: Manitoba Cemeteries and Burial Sites" (revised edition, Special Projects Publication, 106 pages).
