Born in Manchester (Nimisila), E. Franklin Twp., Summit Co. OH on land granted in 1805 to my 3rd great-grandfather John Harter (1769-1848), I graduated from the College of Wooster (Wooster, OH) with a B.A. in physical/health education. After a few years teaching/coaching in the Hudson Public Schools, I joined the faculty at The University of Akron, am now full professor in my 50th year of teaching -- responsible for courses in motor learning & development, sport psychology. I married (1969), had a son (1974), and earned a Ph.D. from Kent State University (1980). My research on children's competitive and social physique anxiety has been presented at conferences all over the world. My grants and volunteering have provided tennis lessons and healthy lifestyle programming for thousands of Akron's at-risk children. Since I was a child, my parents and I researched, recorded details of family history. Now through DNA, Ancestry, and Find-A-Grave, my cousins and I seek to connect as many family members as possible.
