We live in western Rowan County, with easy access to cemeteries within a 15-20 mile radius located in Rowan, Iredell, and Davie Counties.
I try to be smart with my trips out to these areas. Unfortunately, some requests are guesses causing wasted fuel and time for area volunteers. I've learned to double check requests before claiming them by either working with a cemetery administrator or church or using county cemetery records at our great Rowan County Library History room. In the process I've accumulated several lists to use at home.
Family names being researched for my husband's paternal side are Steele, Chambers, Graham, Knox, Brandon, Cowan, Wilson, Luckey, Locke, among others; his maternal side includes Walker, King, Quarterman, Smith, Jones, Way, Winn, Reade, among others & mostly in south Georgia before 1800's.
My paternal side includes Hutcheson, Launius/Lanius, Durham, Chaffin, Dudley, Johnson, Carleton, Chiles/Childs, Smith, and Johnson- to name a few and mostly of colonial Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina; the maternal side is Ellis, Reynolds, and Potts, predominantly of colonial Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, and a bit of North Carolina.
Even after several years of working on family trees for both sides in order to digitize the information from the paper and books left to us, I always have more data to add as the genealogy world digitizes more data for our research. I am very grateful for this.
Memorials will be happily transferred unless they are our family. Ask for them through the Edit tab on the memorial, and you are welcome to use my memorial photos for genealogical purposes. Just give me credit.
