Born 10 July 1944 at St. Thomas Hospital, Marshalltown, Iowa, youngest son of Fred Earl Coulter & Lucille Eleanor Dutton. 1966 graduate of Drake University, Des Moines, with a double major in history & journalism. Editor with Meredith Publishing (Better Homes & Gardens), 1966-1987.
Also a freelance author. His articles have appeared in various Better Homes and Gardens magazines and books, plus Midwest Living magazine, VICTORIA magazine, IOWAN magazine, Healthways magazine, American History Illustrated magazine, The American Genealogist quarterly, the "Times Past" Sunday supplement of the Marshalltown Times-Republican newspaper, and The Conrad Record weekly newspaper.
Wrote a 4,500-word how-to genealogy article, "Tracing Your Family Tree," for the June 1977 issue of Better Homes & Gardens magazine, starting on page 10.
Did a bit of modeling, including a full-page ad in Playboy magazine for Sheaffer retro fountain pens; also portrayed an attentive wine steward in the March 1985 issue of Better Homes & Gardens, page 103, when the scheduled model didn't arrive at the photo studio.
