Melvyn Haywood Mel was born to Grace Emily and Lester Haywood on November 19, 1930 in Athens, Texas. His family moved to Houston when he was a young child. Mel attended the Houston public schools, graduating from Sam Houston High School. Mel then went to Baylor University. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. Mel attended Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas for two years.

Mel married Beverly Puckett on June 5, 1954, at First Baptist Church, Bartlett, Texas. Mel became Director of Management Information Systems at Texas Christian University, retiring in 1993. In 1994 he moved to Round Rock. Mel became very involved in volunteer work helping the mentally challenged at the Austin State Supported Living Center, where he also served as the treasurer of the Volunteer Council.

Mel was ordained as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Round Rock in 1996. He served as a teacher for the home-bound. At church he taught the Caleb class and served as an usher and in many other capacities. Mel was a member of the Baylor Alumni Association, Old Main Society, Heritage Club, and the Fort Worth Elks Lodge. Mel was a dedicated Christian. He had a generous heart. He was always willing to help anyone.

Mel passed away October 28, 2012. He is survived by his wife Beverly, his brothers-in-law Eugene Puckett of Austin and Bill Hart of Ft. Worth, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Carolyn Koehler of Calvert, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a viewing Thursday, November 1 from 6pm-8pm at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas (512) 251-4118. Funeral services will be Friday, November 2 at 1pm at the First Baptist Church in Round Rock, Texas. Burial will be at the Bartlett City Cemetery, Bartlett, Texas.
