Susan Matilda "Mattie" Jones was born June 1855 in Walnut Township, Madison Co, Iowa to William and Lucinda Lee Fivecoat. She married George Jones in December 1874 in Marion City, Iowa. The family lived for a while in Ness County, Kansas in a dugout house and George worked on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad. Life become difficult with jobs and dust storms and droughts so the family moved in 1888 to Jasper co, MO where George worked in the lead-zinc mines. George and Mattie had 10 children, the last two dying very young. George died in 1935 Mattie died in 1937 while visiting her step daughter, Nora, in Kansas.
