George's family was from a long line of Quakers, although he and Mattie were not Quakers. They are stated in a family record to be Methodists. He was of Welsh descent and his forefathers came over with Wm Penn's ships in late 1600's and settled in PA. A lot of records on his early family are with the Quaker records. George Jones mustered into the Civil War from Indianapolis and served from May-Sept, 1864. They were ordered to Tennessee and assigned duty as railroad guards. His brother, Milton, died from wounds suffered at the battle of Stone's River, Murfreesboro, Tn. After George's service, he returned to farming and married Margaret Pike. After Margaret's death, he married Mattie in 1874. They had nine children.
