Daughter of Martin and Hannah Caroline Faries Jones, Sallie received several letters from her brother, James T. Jones when his Confederate Unit from Panola County, Mississippi went to Virginia during 1862. James was eventually killed at the Battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland (also known as the Battle of Antietam) which was fought on September 17th of that year. In 1865 she married William Winchester Miller who was arrested in March, 1869 and held in prison for several months at Vicksburg, Mississippi, without ever going to trial. Miller and his wife corresponded by letter at this difficult time in their lives. Finally, after she became ill with fevers and chills, she penned a letter to her sister, Demarius Jones Low and also wrote some poetry. All of this correpondence, consisting of about nineteen letters and papers, were kept by her Jones family members for nearly 150 years, at which time they were donated to the University of Mississippi Department of Archives and History. These letters give a personal look at a unique time in our country's past and into the hopes and dreams of a young woman who hoped to see her children become grown men. This fervent prayer would not come to pass, as she died at only 29 years of age of a disease which seemed most probably to have been Yellow Fever. She and her husband became parents to two sons: Sidney and Martin. William W. Miller would remarry and have other children following her death, but his loving relationship with his first wife, Sallie, will remain preserved forever in the letters they wrote to one another. Their correspondenc can be seen online at the site for the University of Mississippi Libraries Digital Collections under the general title "Civil War Archive" and is part of the "James T. Jones Collection".

Inscription

"As a wife, devoted. As a mother, affectionate. As a friend, ever kind and true. In life she exhibited all the graces of a Christian. In death her redeemed spirit returned to God, who gave it."
