Obituary -

COLUMBIA - Patience Bonham Shand Gause Chappell died on June 2, 2016, at the age of 101 years old. Born in Columbia on June 16, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Patience Bonham Shand and Gadsden Edwards Shand, the fifth child, being predeceased by Gadsden E. Shand Jr., Annie Bonham (Mrs. Charles Adams), Robert Wallace Shand and Julian Bonham Shand. She was known as "Bonnie."

She attended Bon Air School and Columbia High and received her B.S. degree in education from the University of South Carolina in 1934. Bonnie was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.

She was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin Gause, who died in 1951. She is survived by three children, Benjamin Gause (Jan) of Isle of Palms, Gadsden Shand Gause (Patsy) of Atlanta, Ga., and Patience (Patty) Gause Lee (Frank M. Lee) of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Roberta Gause Mullek, Benjamin Gause Jr., Nancy Gause Pahl, Elizabeth Gause Cleveland, Kathaleen Gause Duke, Patience Lee Everson and Helen Lee Smith; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In 1963, Bonnie married Dr. Travis Chappell, who died in 1997. Surviving from this marriage are a stepdaughter, Frances Chappell Jeter of Beaufort, and a stepson, James H. Chappell of Columbia. A second stepson, Travis Chappell Jr., died in 1990. There are six stepgrandchildren and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren from this marriage.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Home Instead and Hospice for all their kind and sweet treatment of "Bon Bon." Mrs. Chappell was a member of Trinity Cathedral, where she will be buried next to many ancestors in the churchyard.

A celebration of life service will be held at Trinity and reception in Satterlee Hall will be held at 11:00 on June 16, 2016, on her 102nd birthday. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Trinity Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC 29201, or the Saluda County Historical Society, 105 Law Range Street, Saluda, SC 29138, would be welcomed.
